bob@allosaur.cis.ohio-state.edu (Bob Sutterfield) (08/23/89)
Some of our neighbors noticed a sag in the news flow ("a disturbance
in The Force") because tut.cis.ohio-state.edu was down for a while on
Tuesday, Aug 22. All is well now.
Our news partition, while showing its usual ~30Mb and 6,000 inodes
free, was *completely fragmented* so that no non-zero length file
could be written. This, of course, somewhat affected our ability to
perform news transactions :-) It was decided (8:40) to undertake
drastic measures. After a quick dump, an even quicker newfs, and a
painfully long restore, we came back on the air in midafternoon
(14:43). Yes, that spindle's performance is somewhat better now :-)
As far as we can tell, no news was lost, only perhaps delayed, and the
same for mail. If you were attempting anonymous FTP access to
tut.cis.ohio-state.edu, or anonymous UUCP access to a lot of the stuff
on osu-cis, now you know why you were unsuccessful. Please try again,
and sorry for the inconvenience.
