Forwarded From : James Waldron Of 107/501 UNICEF: DIRECT MAIL SCHEME BENEFITS WATER PROJECTS IN MALAWI A direct mail fundraising scheme in Australia involving the insertion of a special appeal in household water consumption bills will help raise awareness and support for water and sanitation projects in Malawi, the Australian Committee for UNICEF said. The experimental scheme was initiated by the Committee in co-operation with the Australian Freedom from Hunger Organisation, an NGO affiliated with FAO and two state governments. The process goes like this: the Departments of Water Resources for each of the New South Wales and Western Australian Governments send out invoices to some 2 million customers for the cost of their regular water consumption. When the accounts go out over the coming months, the invoices will include a brochure appealing for funds to benefit water and sanitation projects in Malawi. The scheme has been developed in close collaboration with the UNICEF office in Malawi, according to the Committee. An initial amount of 100,000 Australian dollars from the government has been received to help start the project, in addition to a minimum commitment of A$50,000 the Committee hopes to garner from its own fundraising efforts.
