SPECIAL COMMITTE AGAINST APARTHEID COMMITTE PROTESTS PROPOSED VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA BY BRITISH CRICKETERS The Special Committee against Apartheid has expressed concern over the reported plans of a number of British cricketers to tour South Africa early next year and in 1991. In a statement on behalf of the Committee today, its acting Chairman, Jai Pratap Rana (Nepal), said the tour, in defiance of the international boycott of apartheid sports, was an affont to international efforts towards the total isolation of the South African regime, in sports as well as in other fields. The statement said cricket and other sports in South Africa were subjected to the same racial practices which were imposed by the system of apartheid and were still prevailing in that country. The anti-apartheid Committee said the tour would be taking place as efforts were under way at the United Nations to begin implementation of the International Convention against Apartheid in Sports. The proposed cricket tour, as well as a rugby tour expected to begin soon, were contrary to the Convention and the principles of the International Olympic Committee. The Committee said it earnestly hoped the British Government would adopt "meaningful measures" to dissuade its nationals from engaging in sporting activities in South Africa. * Origin: UNITEX --> Toward a United Species (1:107/501) ------------------------------ Ported to USENET from UNITEX NETWORK via UNITEX BBS: 201-795-0733 We want ** your ** news bulletins: (FAX: 212-787-1726 : Attention: James Waldron) or ...!uunet!rutgers!rubbs!unitex
