Prepared by: Dr. James Waldron, Director UNITEX Network a. primary & overall goals of UNITEX b. information vs major news events ------------------------------------------------------------------------- a. goals of unitex One of the primary objectives which UNITEX has addressed in the past two years is a goal very similiar to that of the United Nations in the area of information exchange, especially as it relates to this interchange between the industrialized nations (North) and the developing nations (South). Narrowing the North-South information gap is an ongoing concern for UNITEX. In addition, we have supported Human Rights issues, environmental and ecological issues, disarmament concerns and other issues which are in harmony with the Charter of the United Nations. UNITEX is an independent agency and is not part of the United Nations. We are certainly *not* a conventional news service with 'clip' data as was suggested by Gary Delong (gdel@cvman.prime.com) but a Network that gathers information on behalf of the United Nations that is not published in other newspapers or press services. We access UN databases directly and disseminate this information as fast and reliably as possible. In adddition, we have recently been given sanction by the Tibet Government-In-Exile (New York Office of Tibet) to disseminate their official news and press releases, and as such, are supporting the Human Rights Issue not only for the Tibet-China situation but for anyone needing to be heard. UNITEX has carried the Urgent Action files for Amnesty International for more than 2 years and has worked with other organizations on international issues, such as disarmament, safe uses of nuclear energy, Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNISPACE), etc. b. information vs news events and 'clips' What UNITEX disseminates is not normally considered "news" in the usual sense of the word. Issues and information contained in the UNITEX messages are not day-by-day time critical. Press releases concerning treaty agreements, laws of the sea and national boundary questions, statements from the UN General Assembly, disarmament questions and environmental issues and conferences are certainly time-relevant but not as time-critical as are 'news clips'. This is material that, in general, is more informative than it is date or time critical. We hope these first few messages in MISC.HEADLINES.UNITEX will be informative, bacground articles for 'newcomers' to the group.
