UN PRESS: NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF POLAND Stansilaw Pawlak, the new Permanent Representative of Poland, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Javier P|rez de Cu|llar. Mr. Pawlak has served as Director at the Department of International Organizations of Poland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1986. He has been a member of the International Law Commission since 1987 and Associate Professor of International Law and International Relations at Warsaw University since 1974. After joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1955, Mr. Pawlak served as Legal Adviser of the Polish delegation to the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission in Korea (1957-1958). He was Attach|, then Second Secretary, of Poland's Embassy in Tokyo from 1958 to 1963, and served as Senior Counsellor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1963 to 1965. Mr. Pawlak was Deputy Chief of the Polish delegation and Senior Political Adviser at the International Control Commission for Supervision and Control in Viet Nam in 1965-1966; in 1966 and 1967 he was Senior Counsellor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and from 1967 to 1970 he was First Secretary of Poland's Embassy in Washington. He also served as Senior Counsellor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1970-1973), Deputy Director of the Minister's Cabinet at the Foreign Ministry (1973-1975), and Director of the Ministry's Department of International Organizations (1975-1978). From 1978 to 1983, he served as Ambassador to Canada, and was Director of the Legal and Treaties Department of the Foreign Ministry from 1983 to 1985. Mr. Pawlak is a member of the following bodies: the editorial board of the Recueil de documents, published by the Polish Institute of International Affairs; the Legislative Council to the Prime Minister of Poland; the Science Council of the Polish Institute of International Affairs; the Science Council of the Institute of International Law of Warsaw University; and the editorial board of the Polish Yearbook of International Law. Educated at the Law Faculty, Warsaw University, Mr. Pawlak received his LL.M in 1955, his Dr. Juris in 1967, and his Dr. hab. of Political Science in 1973. He also attended Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan, in 1960 and 1961. Mr. Pawlak was born on 27 September 1933 in Kalisz, Poland.
