DOD: ASSISTANCE FOR MISSING CONGRESSMAN LELAND The Department of Defense is assisting in the search for Congressman "Mickey" Leland and his party who were reported missing Monday when his twin-engined, chartered Otter aircraft failed to return to Addis Ababa. DoD has provided the following: - One C-141 aircraft - 35-person medical team - Three-person UHF tactical satellite communication support team - One person to provide limited mobile weather assessment capability - A link-up to the U.S. Air Force Global Weather Satellite System - Two search and rescue planners The C-141 is assigned to the 438th Military Airlift Wing, McGuire AFB, N.J. It departed Rhein-Main Air Base, Germany, at 5:42 a.m. EDT today and is scheduled to arrive in Addis Ababa at approximately 4:30 p.m. EDT. Additional support to be provided includes two United Kingdom-based HC-130 aircraft with search and rescue capability, two pararescue teams, and a C-141 carrying spare parts and other support items. MH-60 helicopters will be deployed aboard C-5 aircraft from Eglin AFB, Fla. Also, the Government of Ethiopia will permit a U-2 to overfly the search area to take reconnaissance photographs. Officials are considering deploying additional U.S. Army UH-60 heli- copters from Europe to assist in the search. They also would be transported aboard a C-5 aircraft. An aircraft accident investigation team is on call to assist the Government of Ethiopia if requested. Most of the personnel and assets being provided are from the U.S. European Command.
