UNPRESS: ANTI-APARTHEID COMMITTEE CALLS FOR INTERNATIONAL EFFORTS TO SAVE LIVES OF ROBERT MCBRIDE AND OTHER SOUTH AFRICAN POLITICAL PRISONERS The following statement was issued today by the Chairman of the Special Committee against Apartheid, Joseph N. Garba (Nigeria): The Special Committee against Apartheid is concerned that political prisoner Robert John McBride is still on death row along with 70 other political prisoners. Their continued imprisonment demonstrates that repression against apartheid opponents is a permanent feature of the Pretoria regime and shall remain an obstacle to any process aimed at resolving the conflict in South Africa. The Special Committee calls on the international community to strengthen its efforts to save the lives of McBride and the 70 other political prisoners on death row at present. It calls, in particular, on the international legal community to isolate the apartheid judiciary. * Origin: UNITEX --> Toward a United Species (1:107/501) -- unitex - via FidoNet node 1:107/520 UUCP: ...!rutgers!rubbs!unitex ARPA: unitex@rubbs.FIDONET.ORG --- Patt Haring | UNITEX : United Nations patth@sci.ccny.cuny.edu | Information patth@ccnysci.BITNET | Transfer Exchange
