SUDAN TO GET 26 MLN DLRS IN FOOD AID FOR NORTH:

(Reuter Library Report, August 17,DATELINE: KHARTOUM)

The United Nations World Food Programme, which already provides food
for thousands of starving people in south Sudan, is to spend 26 million
dollars on aid for the relatively prosperous north.

U.N. relief coordinator Khalid Adly told Reuters on Thursday the cash
would be spent during the next three years on grain and other staples for
farmers in areas hit by shortages.

The agreement to supply the aid was signed on Wednesday in Khartoum by
the U.N. and the Sudanese government.

Adly said about five million people would benefit from the aid in the
Moslem, Arabised north.

At least 250,000 Sudanese died in south Sudan last year from a
combination of disease and famine, exacerbated by a six- year-long war
between the government and the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Army.
