Nearly $$8 Million in Food Aid Approved for Africa (Associated Press, August 16, 152 words, DATELINE: ROME) The World Food Program said Wednesday it will provide nearly $$8 million in emergency food aid for drought victims and refugees in several African countries. The shipments will include: - 15,795 tons of maize and 195 tons of beans to Mozambique, costing about $$4.4 million, for 750,000 displaced people and others affected by food shortages and civil strife. - 7,350 tons of wheat and 368 tons of butter oil to Mauritania, at a cost o about $$2.6 million, for 102,088 returnees from Senegal in a six-month resettlement period. - 1,872 tons of red sorghum and 94 tons of vegetable oil to Senegal for 26,000 refugees and displaced persons from Mauritania, at a cost of $$505,800. - 1,238 tons of maize, 222 tons of beans and 101 tons of vegetable oil to Tanzania for 18,500 refugees mainly from Mozambique but also from Uganda, Rwanda, Zaire, South Africa, Burundi and Malawi.
