NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF JAMAICA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

     Herbert Samuel Walker, the new Permanent Representative of Jamaica,
presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar.

     Mr. Walker served as Jamaican High Commissioner to the United Kingdom
from 1981 to 1988.  Earlier, he was Governor of the Bank of Jamaica from 1978
to 1981.  He was Jamaica's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in
Geneva in 1972.  He headed Jamaica's delegation to the meeting of the Special
Committees on Preference of the United Nations Conference on Trade and
Development in 1970 and attended various international trade conferences as
the Permanent Secretary of Jamaica's Ministry of Trade and Industry in 1965.

     Born on 29 February, 1924, Mr. Walker holds degrees in economics and
political science and in law from Mcgill University, Canada, and Victoria
University, Manchester, England.

     Mr. Walker is married and has two children.
