ESTABLISHMENT OF CIAV
SECRETARIES-GENERAL OF UNITED NATIONS AND ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES
DECIDE ON ESTABLISHMENT OF CIAV
The Secretaries-General of the United Nations and the Organization of
American States (OAS) met today at United Nations Headquarters and decided to
establish the International Support and Verification Commission (CIAV), as
envisioned in the Joint Plan agreed by the Central American Presidents at
their meeting in Tela, Honduras, for the "voluntary demobilization,
repatriation or relocation of the members of the Nicaraguan Resistance and
their families, as well as assistance in the demobilization of all those
involved in armed actions in the countries of the region when they voluntarily
seek it", starting on 6 September 1989.
During a working luncheon, the Secretaries-General discussed the
co-ordination of their efforts for the execution and implementation of the
plan.
