Cocaine, Heroin Creates Double Addiction (CBS story) --> PORTED TO UNITEX BY: CBS Evening News Friday August 25, 1989 Betsy Aaron New York, NY 2:45 (13%) The high from smoking crack is brief, and crack addict ROBERT said that when he crashed from it he often thought of committing suicide. Then a drug dealer taught Robert to mix a little heroin with the crack. ROBERT, now a resident of Phoenix House, said the coke brought him up, and the heroin leveled him out. Dr. MITCHELL ROSENTHAL, president, Phoenix House, says that together, both drugs work better than either drug alone, and all the unpleasant side effects are smoothed out. Mixing cocaine and heroin is not new, but it is now being packaged and sold to kids as young as 9. Former drug dealer JAMES says that he doesn't care if someone is 2 years old, if they give him $35 for some crack, he'll sell it. Drug abuse researcher WILLIAM HOPKINS says if they are mixing heroin with crack, it is highly possible for them to become addicted to heroin. In a survey conducted by Phoenix House, 40% of the crack addicts were using the crack/heroin combination. Since the combination can be smoked, it's easier to sell because many people don't want to use a needle. ROSENTHAL says it's a new market, with a new and better drug. * Origin: UNITEX --> Toward a United Species (1:107/501) --- Patt Haring | UNITEX : United Nations patth@sci.ccny.cuny.edu | Information patth@ccnysci.BITNET | Transfer Exchange -=- Every child smiles in the same language. -=-
