In Poland today, Robert Dole, Senate Republican Leader, and Elizabeth Dole,
Secretary of Labor, called on Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki. The Doles
said that the Bush Administration is looking for ways to help Poland that
doesn't involve more money. For example, American advisors can help retrain
Polish workers that are replaced as factories are streamlined. ELIZABETH DOLE
said that helping to provide that safety net for workers is something that
will be needed and won't be easy. A group of Democratic congressmen, also
visiting the Prime Minister today, suggested that the President's limited aid
package may not be enough for the new Polish government. Senator FRANK
LAUTENBERG, D-NJ, says they are looking for serious and aggressive response
from the US. In Gdansk, Solidarity's leader Lech Walesa said Poland's money
problems will mean sacrifices, meaning that strikes will have to be minimized.
With a $39 billion foreign debt and 200% inflation, the Solidarity leaders
will have to make tough, unpopular decisions. In a interview with Barbara
Walters, Walesa warned that the US has a stake in getting Poland back on its
feet. WALESA said if Poland fails it can blame the world, even the US. The
US will be to blame, WALESA said, if it doesn't give the cooperation needed
for Poland to succeed, because Poland, by itself, doesn't have the technology
to keep up.
