Earthwatch needs volunteer birdwatchers for three upcoming ornithological expeditions to China,New Zealand, and Hawaii. Teams leave soon, so please apply early to Earthwatch at 680 Mt. Auburn Street, Box 403, Watertown, MA 02272 (617/926-8200) All levels of experience are welcome. One Thousand Cranes: Drs. Martin Williams and Hsu Weishu (Beijing Natural History Museum) will be conducting a study of one of Asia's most important migration flyways near Beidaihe, China. Volunteers will study Oriental white storks, white-necked cranes, among many other types of Cranes. Team Dates: Team I: Oct. 6-19, 1989 Team II: Oct 20- Nov 2 Team III: Nov 3-16 Seabirds of Kaikoura: Dr. James Mills (New Zealand Science & Research Directorate) will be continuing his 25 year study of red-billed gulls on the mountain studded Kaikoura peninsula on New Zealand's South Island. This study has gained international attention as one of the world's most important ornithological assets. Team I: Oct 1-14, 1989 Team II: Oct 22 - Nov 4 Team III Nov 12-25 Team IV: Dec 3-16, Team V: Jan 2-15, 1990 Saving Hawaii's Forest Birds. Dr. Jeff Hatfield (Patuxent Wildlife Research Center) needs experienced birders in Hawaii Volcanos National Park this winter. His goal is to reintroduce native endangered species including the Hawaiian creeper and the orange-red Hawaii akepa to the spectacular Mauna Loa Strip. Volunteers are needed to walk transects between altitudes of 5,000 and 7,000 feet, recording all bird sightings and song.
