The Israeli Association of Hotels is recruiting young South African Jews to replace Palestinian hotel workers, according to Ha'aretz, Israel's major daily. The Palestinian workers have boycotted Israel in support of the Intifada or have been prevented from reaching work by curfews or detention, the paper reports. The South Africans who have answered advertisements in the Jewish press have travelled to Israel as tourists - which means it is illegal for them to work. When authorities objected, the hoteliers said the South Africans were in Israel under the "law of return", which gives Jews anywhere the right to claim Israeli citizenship, and thus their hiring practices were defensible as "a pure Zionist act." --- Patt Haring | UNITEX : United Nations patth@sci.ccny.cuny.edu | Information patth@ccnysci.BITNET | Transfer Exchange -=- Every child smiles in the same language. -=- -- Patt Haring | UNITEX : United Nations patth@sci.ccny.cuny.edu | Information patth@ccnysci.BITNET | Transfer Exchange -=- Every child smiles in the same language. -=-
