INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON EDUCATION AGAINST APARTHEID OPENS IN GENEVA
GENEVA, 4 September -- A three-day International Seminar on
Education Against Apartheid began its work today, organized by
the NGO Sub-Committee on Racism, Racial Discrimination,
Apartheid and Decolonization in co-operation with the United
Nations Special Committee against Apartheid. Its objectives are
to provide information and wider international publicity to the
current situation in South Africa under apartheid, to evaluate
educational programmes and impact on the international campaign
against apartheid, and to define new forms of education in
support of the international campaign against apartheid and
racial discrimination.
Three workshops will be organized on the following subjects:
Review of anti-apartheid action in the framework of formal
educational institutions and the implications for teachers and
students; the impact of conferences, seminars, workshops etc.,
on education against apartheid; and anti-apartheid education and
mobilization of the public through the media, religious bodies,
NGO activities and other channels of communication and exchange.
After an opening address by Major-General Joseph Garba, Chairman,
Special Committee against Apartheid, the participants heard the
views of Romesh Chandra, Chairman, NGO Sub-Committee on Racism,
Racial Discrimination, Apartheid and Decolonization; K.F.
Nyamekye, Deputy Director, Centre for Human Rights; M.S. Agwani,
Vice-Rector, Jawaharlal Nehru University; Robert Harris,
Secretary-General, World Confederation of Organizations of the
Teaching Professions; and Bojana Jordan, Pan Africanist Congress
of Azania.
