GHANA TO HOST NEXT NON-ALIGNED MINISTERS' MEETING (Reuter Library Report, September 7, 240 words, DATELINE: BELGRADE) Ghana was chosen on Thursday to host the next meeting of non-aligned foreign ministers, diplomats said. The choice was made after a lengthy argument behind closed doors between supporters of the West African nation and of Venezuela, which joined the movement as a full member at this week's summit. African countries meanwhile won the support of the movement for a fresh appeal to rich nations for a better economic deal and an increase in aid. A declaration to be endorsed by heads of state at the close of the non-aligned summit "On the critical economic situation in Africa" said efforts by African nations to reform their economies were not being given adequate international support. The declaration drew attention to "vigorous and significant policy reforms pursued by African countries, which had exacted severe social and political costs." It urged developed nations and multilateral financial institutions to increase resource flows to Africa in real terms and improve the terms and conditions of their aid. It also called for a dialogue with donors on an alternative blueprint for structural adjustment drawn up by the Economic Commission for Africa and approved by the last summit in July of the Organisation of African Unity. The summit closing session was also due to endorse declarations on the conflicts in Chad and the Western Sahara. Both endorsed current peace moves and diplomats said neither was controversial. * Origin: UNITEX --> Toward a United Species (1:107/501) --- Patt Haring | UNITEX : United Nations patth@sci.ccny.cuny.edu | Information patth@ccnysci.BITNET | Transfer Exchange -=- Every child smiles in the same language. -=-
