Enlarged peace conference to be held in sudan
(Xinhua News Agency, SEPTEMBER 7, 356 words, DATELINE: khartoum)
an enlarged conference on promoting the peace process in sudan
will be held here saturday, a senior sudanese official announced
today. col. mohamed al-amin al-khalifa, a member of the 15-man
ruling military council, told a press conference that the peace
conference will deal with the role of religion, the system of
the government, the islamic law and peaceful means to solve the
southern problem. al-khalifa has been appointed as chairman of
a 77-member military and civilian committee set up to prepare
for the peace conference. the conference will be held no matter
whether john garang, leader of the rebel sudan people's
liberation army (spla), attends it or not, because garang does
not represent all sudan, nor does he represent southern sudan,
al-khalifa said. the sudanese government extented an invitation
to garang wednesday to attend the conference, but there were no
reports whether garang has accepted the invitation. al-khalifa
said six committees would be formed to submit to the conference
solutions to the problems currently faced by sudan. when asked
about his personal view about the negotiations held in addis
ababa on august 19 and 20 between the government and the spla
representatives, al-khalifa said the negotiations had achieved
positive results such as continued cooperation between the two
sides in operations of delivering food supplies to starving
sudanese in the south. "we are serious about resolving the
south sudan problem. we have sent high-level delegations to
neighboring arab and african countries to brief their leaders on
sudan's viewpoints on how the south sudan problem is to be
resolved," al-khalifa said. these states, he went on, have
shown willingness to help sudan find a solution to the southem
problem. after the enlarged conference, a government delegation
will resume dialogue with the spla representatives to discuss a
comprehensive peace plan to be submitted by the sudanese
government, al-khalifa added. the spla took up arms in 1983 to
press for greater augonomy and political and administrative
reforms.
