UN PRESS: SECRETARY-GENERAL LEAVES BELGRADE

BELGRADE, 6 September -- The Secretary-General left Belgrade
after attending the opening session of the Ninth Conference of
Non-Aligned Countries on 4 September, and meeting some 30 heads
of delegations and other personalities during his three-day stay
in the Yugoslav capital.
Today, the Secretary-General met for close to one hour with Abdul
Halim Khadam, Vice-President of Syria and Farouk Al Shara,
Foreign Minister of Syria. They discussed the situation in the
Middle East, including Lebanon, and the Iraq-Iran situation.
The Secretary-General also had talks with Bechir Moustapha,
representative of POLISARIO, lasting 20 minutes. They discussed
matters related to the next meeting of the Technical Committee
on Western Sahara expected to take place in October.
The Secretary-General then had discussions with Chairman Yasser
Arafat of Palestine.
The meeting lasted half an hour and dealt with the situation in
the occupied territories and United Nations humanitarian
assistance to the population there. They also discussed the
Middle East peace process and the situation in the region in
general.
Yesterday, the Secretary-General continued his meetings with
heads of delegations; in the late afternoon, with President
Carlos Andres Perez of Venezuela, with whom he discussed
economic issues and various Latin-American problems, including
Central America.
The Secretary-General also had a one-hour and 20 minutes
discussion with Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz of Iraq, reviewing
ways to move forward in the full implementation of resolution
598. The situation in Lebanon was also touched upon.
The Secretary-General will meet again separately with the
foreign ministers of Iran and Iraq later this month on the
occasion of the opening of the General Assembly.
The day ended with a reception given by the outgoing chairman of
the Non-Aligned Movement, President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe.
