UN PRESS RELEASE:
Following is the text of a statement issued by a spokeswoman of
the Secretary-General:
The Secretary-General has learned with deep shock of the
assassination in Windhoek today of a senior official in SWAPO,
Anton Lubowski. The Secretary- General condemns this act
perpetrated against a senior political figure in Namibia as the
election campaign there gathers momentum.
The Secretary-General appeals in the strongest terms to all
those concerned to desist from any action that might further
exacerbate the situation. He urges the Administrator-General,
in the exercise of his primary responsibility for the
maintenance of law and order in the Territory, to do everything
possible to ensure the safety and security of the leaders of all
political parties.
The Secretary-General notes with satisfaction that nine political
parties in Namibia today signed and adopted a code of conduct to
which they will adhere during the present election campaign. He
trusts that the spirit which prompted the adoption of this code
of conduct will prevail in the period ahead
The Secretary-General remains fully determined to carry out the
tasks assigned to him in supervising and controlling free and
fair elections in Namibia this November.
