UN PRESS RELEASE:
Turkey and Cote d'Ivoire have acceded to the International
Convention against the Taking of Hostages. Their instruments of
ratification were received by the United Nations Office of Legal
Affairs on 15 and 22 August, respectively.
Adopted by the General Assembly on 17 December 1979, the
Convention defines the offence of hostage-taking and provides
that the State party in which the offender is found shall be
obliged, if it does not extradite him, to submit the case to its
competent authorities for the purpose of prosecution in
accordance with its laws. This must be done without exception
and whether or not the offence was committed within its
territory.
The Convention entered into force on 3 June 1983.
As of 22 August, a total of 59 States had ratified or acceded to
the Convention.
