About 30 children under the age of five die from malnutrition
every day in the Mtwara region of southern Tanzania, Radio
     Tanzania said today.

The radio quoted experts taking part in an African conference in
Dar es Salaam as saying the figure will go up unless urgent
steps are taken to improve nutritional standarda in the area.

The conference is sponsored by the U.N. Children's Fund
     (UNICEF).

UNICEF representative Seif Athmani told the conference that 1.5
million dollars would be spent this year on nutritional
     programmes in the area.
