FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY RATIFIES PROTOCOL Posting Date: 09/14/89 Source: UNITEX Network, Hoboken, NJ, USA TO AGREEMENT ON IMPORTATION OF EDUCATIONAL, SCIENTIFIC AND CULTURAL MATERIALS UN PRESS RELEASE: The Federal Republic of Germany has ratified the Protocol to the Agreement on the Importation of Educational, Scientific and Cultural Materials. Its instrument of ratification was received by the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs on 17 August. The Agreement, adopted on 17 June 1950 by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), came into force on 21 May 1952. The Agreement exempts books, newspapers, works of art, scientific equipment and a wide range of educational materials from import duties. So far, 78 States have consented to be bound by it. The Protocol was adopted at Nairobi on 26 November 1976 and entered into force on 2 January 1982. It extends the exemption to other materials, including collectors' pieces and articles for the blind and other handicapped persons. As of 17 August, it has has been ratified, accepted or acceded to by 19States: Barbados, Belgium, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Federal Republic of Germany, Greece, HolySee, Iraq, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, San Marino, United Kingdom, United States and Yugoslavia.
