MORE TIBETANS SENTENCED The official Chinese news agency, Xinhua, reported on 13 September that ten Tibetans have been sentenced to prison terms ranging from three years to life for their participation in pro-freedom demonstrations and riots in Lhasa last March. The sentences were issued by Lhasa's municipal court. The life sentence was given to a man, Pasang, charged with "beating, smashing, looting, and burning".Lesser sentences were for causing property damage, instigating protests, or "spying" on behalf of the Dalai Lama. These ten punishments are markedly more severe than three handed down last July for similar "counterrevolutionary" offenses committed during the same disturbances. This brings to thirteen the number of sentences which Beijing officially acknowledges for Tibetans arising from the March riots. In earlier statements the government has admitted three hundred arrests. Unofficial reports have consistently placed the number of arrests and imprisonments in the thousands. There have also been numerous claims of executions, though none have been reported by the government.
