WASHINGTON STATE SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH THE 26 TRIBES LOCATED
WITHIN STATE BORDERS
The Centennial Accord signed by Washington Governor on August 1
is an agreement with the 26 federally recognized Indian tribes
located within state borders designed to build a proper and
positive relationship between state government and tribal
governments.

The document identifies economic development, social services and
natural resources as areas in which they hope to come to
agreement.  The Accord represents a commitment and a recognition
that conflicts between the state and 26 tribes consider the
court to be the last resort.  The Accord is touted as a national
example.

INTERIOR DEPARTMENT ESTABLISHES A GROUP ON INDIAN WATER
SETTLEMENTS
The Secretary of Interior has established a Working Group on
Indian Water Settlements.  The Group will report to the
Interior's Water Policy Council.  It's primary tasks are to
establish a set of principles to guide Indian water settlements;
assist the teams which negotiate settlements, and inform the
Water Policy Council of upcoming actions and progress in
negotiations.

FLORIDA TRIBE TO EXPLORE FOR OIL
The Miccosukee Indian tribe will contract with Shell Oil (thru
Shell Western Company) for a five-year lease to explore and drill
for oil and natural gas on 70,359 acres of the Miccosukee
reservation 

There is some controversy because the reservation lands are near
or within the Florida Everglades.  None of the intial development
is classified as wetlands.  The tribe vows not to damage the
environment.
