BELGIUM: FIRST COUNTRY CONTRIBUTES TO THIRD REPLENISHMENT OF IFAD Posting Date: 09/24/89 Source: UNITEX Network, Hoboken, NJ, USA Host: (201) 795-0733 ISSN: 1043-7932 ROME, 21 September (IFAD) -- The Government of Belgium announced yesterday its decision to pay $3.2 million (123 million Belgian francs) as part of its contribution towards the Third Replenishment of the financial resources of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). Belgium becomes the first contributor in the group of Category I countries to take this early action towards replenishing the Fund's resources. This represents one third of the total expected contribution from Belgium. In a telegram, Antoine Saintraint, representative of Belgium to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), expressed hope that the other members of the Fund would rapidly follow suit. Welcoming Belgium's decision, IFAD's President, Idriss Jazairy, cited it as a moving example of North-South co-operation, demonstrating Belgium's continued commitment to third world self-help development efforts. At the reconvened session of IFAD's twelfth Governing Council, Category I countries pledged to contribute $186.6 million to the Third Replenishment, as well as to match with additional contributions of three to one those of Category III members. Non-oil exporting developing countries of Category III have so far pledged $63.8 million towards IFAD's total resources. The Category II Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) member States have pledged $124.4 million, with the industrialized countries expected to cover the remainder of the total estimated at $566.3 million. To date, the Fund has been successful in mobilizing $10.5 billion from particular recipient Governments and bilateral donors. More than $2.6 billion has come from its own funds. The purpose of the Third Replenishment was to renew these in-house resources in order to ensure IFAD's continued capacity to finance projects in the most needy areas of the world. * Origin: UNITEX --> Toward a United Species (1:107/501) --- Patt Haring | United Nations | FAX: 212-787-1726 patth@sci.ccny.cuny.edu | Information | BBS: 201-795-0733 patth@ccnysci.BITNET | Transfer Exchange | (3/12/24/9600 Baud) -=- Every child smiles in the same language. -=-
