SPECIAL COMMITTEE AGAINST APARTHEID Posting Date: 09/24/89 Source: UNITEX Network, Hoboken, NJ, USA Host: (201) 795-0733 ISSN: 1043-7932 COMMITTE EXPRESSES GRAVE CONCERN AT SOUTH AFRICA BAN ON WOMEN'S PEACEFUL MARCH AGAINST REPRESSION The following statement was issued today by the Acting Chairman of the Special Committee against Apartheid, Guennadi Oudovenko (Ukraine): The Special Committee against Apartheid is gravely concerned at the ban of the peaceful march organized by Women against Repression in South Africa for 23 September 1989. The ban shows that repression continues to be the order of the day, and that the judiciary remains a powerful instrument to silence opponents of apartheid. Only when the regime ceases repression and creates the conditions conducive to a climate for negotiations will the international community regard seriously Mr. de Klerk's pronouncements about "a new South Africa". The Special Committee against Apartheid once again expresses its full support for the march and its admiration for the courageous women who are ready to stand up to repression in their quest for a truly non-racial and democratic society in South Africa. * Origin: UNITEX --> Toward a United Species (1:107/501) --- Patt Haring | United Nations | FAX: 212-787-1726 patth@sci.ccny.cuny.edu | Information | BBS: 201-795-0733 patth@ccnysci.BITNET | Transfer Exchange | (3/12/24/9600 Baud) -=- Every child smiles in the same language. -=-
