US Army announces reassignment of the 6th Infantry Division
(Light) and US Army Garrison, Alaska to be reassigned to
WESTCOM
The Department of the Army announced today that the 6th Infantry
Division (Light) and U.S. Army Garrison, Alaska will be
reassigned from Forces Command (FORSCOM) to Western Command
(WESTCOM) on Oct. 1, 1989. All other FORSCOM Active Army and
Reserve Component units in Alaska will be placed under WESTCOM
as a result of the realignment.
The reassignment is in support of the new Unified Command Plan,
signed by the president on Aug 1, 1989, which places the State
of Alaska in the U.S. Commander-in-Chief Pacific Command
(USCINCPAC) area of responsibility. Placing the 6th ID and U.S.
Army Garrison, Alaska under WESTCOM, the Army component to the
Pacific Command, assures USCINCPAC of responsive Army support in
Alaska.
