The Navy's nuclear-powered submarine USS Alexander Hamilton
(SSBN-617) is scheduled to launch a Demonstration and Shakedown
Operation (DASO) Poseidon C- Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) at
1:30 p.m., Friday, September 29, 1989, while submerged off the
coast of Florida near Cape Canaveral. The purpose of a DASO is
for each assigned crew to satisfactorily demonstrate the required
ability t safely handle, maintain and operate the weapons
system. After each DASO is completed, the submarine is then
     certified for deployment.

There have been 84 flights of the C-3 from Cape Canaveral since
August 196 and 64 launches from a submarine. The two-stage,
2,880 statute mile range Poseidon was sent to sea on its first
deterrent patrol on March 31, 1971, aboard USS James Madison
(SSBN-627). Twelve of the Navy's 35 FBM submarines carry the
     Poseidon C-3.

Media representatives are invited to observe the launch from the
support ship, which will depart from Port Canaveral. Embark
will be a photo/video opportunity only. Boarding time is 7:30
     to 8:30 a.m.
