DOD: POSEIDON MISSILE TEST Posting Date: 09/30/89 UNITEX Network, USA ISSN: 1043-7932 The Navy's nuclear-powered submarine USS Alexander Hamilton (SSBN-617) is scheduled to launch a Demonstration and Shakedown Operation (DASO) Poseidon C- Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) at 1:30 p.m., Friday, September 29, 1989, while submerged off the coast of Florida near Cape Canaveral. The purpose of a DASO is for each assigned crew to satisfactorily demonstrate the required ability t safely handle, maintain and operate the weapons system. After each DASO is completed, the submarine is then certified for deployment. There have been 84 flights of the C-3 from Cape Canaveral since August 196 and 64 launches from a submarine. The two-stage, 2,880 statute mile range Poseidon was sent to sea on its first deterrent patrol on March 31, 1971, aboard USS James Madison (SSBN-627). Twelve of the Navy's 35 FBM submarines carry the Poseidon C-3. Media representatives are invited to observe the launch from the support ship, which will depart from Port Canaveral. Embark will be a photo/video opportunity only.
