Source: odi =========== an INVITATION TO JOIN THE 45TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF THE MEETING ON THE ELBE and THE END OF WORLD WAR II with SOVIET WORLD WAR II VETERANS INTERESTED IN PEACE MARCH IN THE MAY DAY PEACE PARADE THROUGH RED SQUARE IN MOSCOW and MEET WITH SOVIET PEACE COMMITTEES TO DISCUSS PEACE ISSUES April 25, 1990 is the 45th Anniversary of the day the Soviet 48th Guard Divison and the U.S. 69th Infantry Divison met at Torgau on the Elbe River and effectively ended World War II. When they met at the Elbe River, theyfound a large number of dead civilians lying near the bridge. They especially noticed a little girl about 6 lying there, one hand clutching a doll and the other holding the hand of her dead mother. Joe Polowsky (who is buried in Torgau) reports that the Americans and the Soviets were so moved by this that they vowed they would do all in their power to to keep such a terrible war from ever happening again. All during the Cold War the Soviets and the Americans who met at the Elbe have remembered The Oath at the Elbe, have stayed in contact and have done what they could to work for Peace. They will meet again April 25, 1990. And, you are invited to attend, We will then go to the USSR to visit some of the Soviet "Hero Cities" to meet with Soviet War Veterans group and Soviet Peace Committees to discuss Peace Issues and Joint Peace Research with the Soviets. We will visit Moscow (4 days) and march for Peace in the May Day Peace Parade through Red Square; Volgograd (3 days) where you are invited to stay in a Soviet home; Kiev (2 days); Leningrad (4 days). You are invited to make a presentation to the war veterans groups and to the Peace committees with whom we will be meeting. Behavioral Scientists Muzafer and Caroly Sherif found in their famous study on a Connecticut farm that the best way of reducing tensions and violence between groups was to get them working on projects which neither group could accomplish alone. We believe Peace is such a project. And, we want to organize Joint Peace Resarch Groups with the Soviet Union. The cost of the 18 day trip is expected to be about $2700 including round trip air fare from New York City and all rooms and meals. For more information contact: Dr. Donald W. Cole, RODC, c/o The Organization Development Institute, 6501 Wilson Mills Road, Suite K, Cleveland, Ohio 44143 USA Telephone: (216) 461-4333 (PeaceNet: odi) We will need a deposit of $200 to hold a place for you. Please register early because May Day is the biggest holiday of the year in the USSR and Moscow will be very crowded. --- Patt Haring | United Nations | FAX: 212-787-1726 patth@sci.ccny.cuny.edu | Information | BBS: 201-795-0733 patth@ccnysci.BITNET | Transfer Exchange | (3/12/24/9600 Baud) -=- Every child smiles in the same language. -=-
