OIL SPILL AT SOUTH POLE

A huge oil spill in Antarctica has been spreading undetected for
three months, the US NAtional Science Foundation in Washington
said today. (Thurs Sept 28th) About 200,000 litres of deisel fuel
have seeped from storages at the US's South Pole base, spreading
over hundreds of metres and soaking deep into the snow.

A spokesman for the foundation said a cleanup was not planned.

He said the spill was "a leak in the bucket" and the effect on the
environment would be negligible.

The nearest life forms, algae, were 260 kilometres away.
