SAN FRANCISCO, Ca (GP)--The U.S. EPA today announced its
intention to deny a permit application by the U.S. Department of
Energy for the continued operation of a hazardous waste
incinerator and treatment and storage facility at the Lawrence
Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore.

This decision is a victory for environmentalists and local
residents who have been fighting the Livermore Lab's attempts to
win permits for the existing radioactive and toxic waste
incinerator as well as for proposed incinerators. The facility is
operated by the University of California, and is used to store,
treat and incinerate liquid and solid hazardous wastes, including
mixed hazardous and low-level radioactive waste resulting from
the lab's operations.

The facility has been operating since 1980 under the federal
interim status program, and has been under fire from Greenpeace
and others for its contamination of the environment and its role
in the nuclear arms race.

EPA's proposed permit denial would apply to virtually all
hazardous waste operations at the facility. If the denial becomes
final, the facility would be required to cease the storage,
treatment and incineration of all regulated hazardous wastes.

A public hearing will take place on the proposed denial in about
a month in the Livermore area.
