GREENPEACE TO SUPPORT ARIZONA CITIZENS ANTI-TOXICS CAMPAIGN Via GreenLink: ================================================================= October 2, 1989 PHOENIX, Az (GP)--The international environmental organization Greenpeace will campaign throughout Arizona beginning October 9th in support of the Statewide Citizens Rally for the Environment to be held October 14, 1 p.m. at the state capitol in Phoenix. Greenpeace activists, and a 48 foot Greenpeace campaign bus, will visit Phoenix, Tempe, Jerome, Cottonwood, Clarkdale, Sedona, Flagstaff, and the Navajo reservation, urging citizens to attend the October 14th rally at the state capitol. Press conferences will be held as follows: PHOENIX: TUESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 10 a.m. in front of state capitol JEROME: WEDNESDAY, OCT. 11, 12 noon, Main Street, Jerome. The mayor will present the key to the city to Greenpeace. FLAGSTAFF: THURSDAY, OCT. 12, 12 noon, Wheeler Park, adjacent to City Hall Representatives from local community groups will join Greenpeace representatives at each press conference. The October 14 rally is being held in response to increasing efforts by the toxic waste industry to site controversial hazardous waste incinerators and disposal facilities in Arizona. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is requiring states to submit Capacity Assurance Plans by October 17, detailing how the states will handle hazardous waste generated in the state. Throughout the United States, environmental and community groups are demanding the states and EPA emphasize toxics use and waste reduction, not disposal facilities. During the week, Greenpeace and community activists will be completing a petition campaign asking the Governor and the state legislature to place a five year moratorium on the siting of new hazardous waste incinerators and other disposal facilities, and to support the need for toxics use and waste reduction legislation. Sponsors for the statewide citizens rally include: Children for a Safe Environment; Citizens against Toxic Substances; Cashion Citizens for Uncontaminated Water; Concerned Citizens of Buckeye; Concerned Citizens against the Rio Salado Project; Citizens Clearinghouse for Hazardous Wastes; Citizens Committee against Asbestos Dumping; Citizens against Ruining Our Environment (Dilcon, Arizona, Navajo Nation); Citizens against Hazardous Waste in the Verde Valley; Greenpeace; Keep Arizona Beautiful; Keep Sedona Beautiful; Mothers of Maryvale--Concerns about Real Environmental Safety; No Landfill Committee--Casa Grande; Resistance against Trash--Queen Creek: Residents against Agricultural Pesticides; Santa Cruz Valley Environmentalists; National Toxics Campaign; Tisconans for a Clean Environment; Sierra Club; Toxic Waste Investigative Group; Chemically Damaged Workers Coalition.
