Audubon staff scientist Jan Beyea said the group continues to oppose conventional Light Water Reactors (LWRs), which are com- monly used to produce electricity from nuclear processes today. In addition, Beyea said, the effort to develop an "idiot-proof" advanced reactor should be viewed as an insurance policy if solar and other renewable energy technologies do not achieve widespread use. A Sierra Club spokesman reiterated the Club's continued opposi- tion to nuclear power, noting its environmental problems and the fact that nuclear costs have steadily increased while those of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies are declin- ing. * * * (From Wind Energy Weekly #367, 8/25/89.
