/* Written 9:05 pm Oct 5, 1989 by fbp in cdp:ncosh.homeporti */ /* ---------- "Statement by Dinkins on NY Homepor" ---------- */ STATEMENT BY DAVID N. DINKINS ENDORSEMENT BY VOTERS FOR A NUCLEAR FREE NEW YORK SEPTEMBER 7, 1989 I am delighted to receive the endorsement of Voters for a Nuclear Free New York. Our struggle together against the navy homeport has been consistent and determined. We have refused to let the myths about the homeport go unchallenged. We have refused to ignore the potential dangers of a nuclear accident in New York Harbor. We have refused to settle for an emergency preparedness plan that is a farce. We have refused to believe that the city's economic health and prosperity depends upon playing host to a military base. The fight against the homeport -- our fight -- is a struggle for a peaceful, safe and prosperous New York. I am committed to avoiding the risks of a nuclear weapon accident in our harbor. The notion that we would expose ourselves to such a risk is the product of the short-sighted policies of Ed Koch. If we can't contain an asbestos accident in Gramercy Park, how does he expect us to handle a nuclear accident in New York Harbor? As Mayor, I will do everything in my power to make certain that no additional city funds are spent to facilitate the construction or operation of the homeport. As Mayor, I will scrap the emergency preparedness plan and provide New Yorkers with a realistic assessment of the risks involved and its true costs to the taxpayers of this city. As Mayor, I will personally take our case to Washington and fight to see that the project be discontinued. I guarantee that my election as Mayor will be a turning point in our campaign to keep New York Harbor a nuclear-free harbor. We will continue the fight we began together -- and we will win. --- Patt Haring | United Nations | Did u read patth@sci.ccny.cuny.edu | Information | misc.headlines.unitex patth@ccnysci.BITNET | Transfer Exchange | today? -=- Every child smiles in the same language. -=-
