NAMIBIA: UNTAG MEETS SWAPOL ON DEMOBILIZATION Windhoek, 4 Oct.89 (NAMPA)-- The UNTAG police chief, Steven Fanning and the deputy force Commander, Brigadier Daniel Opande, travelled this morning to Oshakati to discuss practical aspects of the demobilization of the counter-insurgency unit Koevoet with senior South African police officials including General Dolf Gouws and Major Piet Fouche. The UNTAG chief spokesman, Fred Eckhard told a media briefing today that the visit to Oshakati, northern Namibia, follows a meeting yesterday at which complete agreement was reached between UNTAG and the South West African Police (SWAPOL) on the detailed proposals for the modalities of demobilization including provision with the identification of those demobilized and the inventorying of weapons, vehicles and other equipment. Demobilization of the Koevoet took place on Saturday (30 Sept.89), but according to Eckhard, the problem was that there were no proper procedures for UNTAG to be able to verify the process.. Eckhard said that Saturday's verification consisted of a head count which came up with a figure of 930 individuals out of the 1200. UN Security Council Resolution 435 of calls for the formal disbandment of Koevoet by the last day on September. --- Patt Haring | United Nations | Did u read patth@sci.ccny.cuny.edu | Information | misc.headlines.unitex patth@ccnysci.BITNET | Transfer Exchange | today? -=- Every child smiles in the same language. -=-
