Via GreenLink: ============== LAKE FOREST, Ill. (UPI) -- Plastic foam products, including coffee cups and other carryout containers, have been banned from the campus of Lake Forest College, a published report said Wednesday. It is the first college in the Chicago area to take such action, although others are considering a ban, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. The school's food service spent $35,000 last year on plastic foam products, spokesman Tom Ryan said. He said the cost will be doubled by using paper products but will be absorbed by implementing economies in other areas of the food service. Eugene Hotchkiss, president of the private college, said the ban will help resolve a national problem. "We as a college, especially one that offers a major in environmental studies, must do our part in bringing this potential ecological disaster under control," he said. The ban was recommended by the college's League for Environmental Awareness and Protection and the Interfaith Center. Brian Lipsett, science adviser to the Citizens' Clearinghouse for Hazardous Wastes of Arlington, Va., estimated plastic foam, which is not biodegradable, and other plastics account for about one-third of the nation's garbage by volume. Bailey Condrey, spokesman for the Council for Solid Waste Solutions in Washington, said a recent study by Franklin Associates indicated plastic foam from food service items account for only 0.25 percent by weight and 1.2 percent by volume of the nation's garbage. --- Patt Haring | United Nations | Did u read patth@sci.ccny.cuny.edu | Information | misc.headlines.unitex patth@ccnysci.BITNET | Transfer Exchange | today? -=- Every child smiles in the same language. -=-
