ALTERNATIVE-SUSTAINABLE-DEVELOPMENT
TETEPARE ISLAND, WEST SOLOMONS
Recently we had a visit from Dennis McAdams who is looking for
models of alternative sustainable development for tropical rain
forest, in particular the Solomon Island Tetepare.
Being the son -in-law of a traditional chief, who has land rights
to the area, he is in a unique position to put forward an alter
native environmentally sensitive plan for what could happen on
this currently uninhabited island. In so doing he may be able to
counter the pressure for the usual short term benefits of logging
devestation.
I have sent him the details of a project in Western Samoa, where
30,000 acres of rainforest was saved by the American Company
Natures Way, who payed off the peoples debts, in exchange for the
right to do scientific research on medicinal plants. In so doing
they stopped logging in the area.
Otherwise I have little knowledge of any other projects of this
nature, to assist Dennis with. Any suggestions of where to look?
So far he has a few ideas such as light tourism, butterfly farm
ing and harvesting medicinal plants. The island is around 15miles
long and would seem to be a unique opportunity to develop some
thing sustainable and sensible.....
