INFORMATION FOR USE BY MEDIA CORRESPONDENTS WISHING TO ENTER
     NAMIBIA TO COVER NOVEMBER ELECTIONS

Nationals of countries normally needing visas to enter Namibia
are required to obtain a visa from South African Consular
     Services.

Correspondents wishing to cover the elections are required to be
accredited by the United Nations Transition Assistance Group
(UNTAG) in Namibia in order to have access to UNTAG premises and
     attend UNTAG press events.

Accreditation is done on arrival in Namibia, not before, at
UNTAG headquarters, corner Uhland and Leutwein, Windhoek (Tel.
229-220, x2417). No photos are necessary. Press briefings are
     held daily at noon.

In addition, separate accreditation to work within the Territory
is required by the Administrator-General and can be obtained
upon arrival. Two photos are necessary.

Hotel rooms will become increasingly scarce as election time
draws closer. An accommodation crisis is expected. The UNTAG
press office will not be in a position to help.

Two press centres exist in Windhoek which have a limited number
of rooms now fully booked; however, they offer a variety of
services, including a "bulletin board" through which
correspondents might make contact in order to share
accommodation information. They are: The Namibian Press Centre
     (226-438 or 439) and Dateline (37930 or 31).

Commercial services are available at the two press centres, and
at the Windhoek Post Office. Additional facilities are being
set up by the Administrator-General's Office. Radio quality
lines are not available, although telephone service is
     reasonably reliable.

Satellite facilities can be booked through the South African
Broadcasting Corporation in Windhoek. It is safe to assume that
the entire communications infrastructure will be under enormous
strain during the week of the election.

An excellent road network extends throughout the territory.
Commercial car rental is available, though like most other
resources this could be depleted during the peak period. Namib
Air provides infrequent air service within Namibia. A small
number of aircraft is available for charter.

The UNTAG Press Office will assist in every way possible.
Contact Fred Eckhard, spokesman (ext. 2136), or Fika Perie,
     assistant (ext. 2417).
