RIGHTS
A national conference on the rights of the child, held in Seoul
on 23 September, unanimously adopted a resolution urging the
government to ratify the Convention on the Rights of the Child
and to take the lead to protect such rights. Seven hundred
participants, representing national and local government
officials and a wide range of NGOs, attended the one-day event.
In addition, the resolution called on the entire country to join
hands in solving environmental and social problems facing
today's children and participants pledged to promote the rights
of children in close co-operation with other countries so that
"Korean children will develop to be useful member of the global
village."
The conference also featured popular media personalities who read
the 1959 U.N. Declaration on the Rights of the Child and heard
intellectuals deliberate on key issues of children's rights in
Korea. A song on children's rights was introduced by popular
singer Miss Sun Hee Lee and a nine-year-old child. Wide
coverage was given by television, radio and major newspapers.

15 Lines NW1053 - PERUVIAN LABOUR UNIONS BACK CSDR
For the first time in Peru, the country's four national labour
unions met to discuss child health in order to find ways
organized labour could effectively contribute to improving the
situation of children in the country.
The meeting, which was held 4-6 August, gathered together 130
leaders representing the General Confederation of Peruvian
workers (CGTP), the National Confederation of Workers (CNT), the
Workers of the Peruvian Revolution (CTRP) and the Confederation
of Peruvian Workers (CTP).
To encourage child survival actions the four unions agreed to
establish a joint commission called the "Inter-Union Commission
for Child Survival and Defense of Female and Child Health." In
addition, the four unions pledged to participate jointly in the
organization of national vaccination campaigns during 1989, and
issued a statement requesting the government, the business
community, professional associations, along with other sectors,
to make child survival and development a national priority.
