KOREA HOLDS NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CHILD RIGHTS - NEWSWIRE 1052 Posting Date: 10/09/89 Copyright UNITEX Communications, 1989 UNITEX Network, USA ISSN: 1043-7932 17 Lines NW1052 - KOREA HOLDS NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CHILD RIGHTS A national conference on the rights of the child, held in Seoul on 23 September, unanimously adopted a resolution urging the government to ratify the Convention on the Rights of the Child and to take the lead to protect such rights. Seven hundred participants, representing national and local government officials and a wide range of NGOs, attended the one-day event. In addition, the resolution called on the entire country to join hands in solving environmental and social problems facing today's children and participants pledged to promote the rights of children in close co-operation with other countries so that "Korean children will develop to be useful member of the global village." The conference also featured popular media personalities who read the 1959 U.N. Declaration on the Rights of the Child and heard intellectuals deliberate on key issues of children's rights in Korea. A song on children's rights was introduced by popular singer Miss Sun Hee Lee and a nine-year-old child. Wide coverage was given by television, radio and major newspapers. Source: Ralph Diaz, UNICEF Seoul PERUVIAN LABOUR UNIONS BACK CSDR - NEWSWIRE 1053 15 Lines NW1053 - PERUVIAN LABOUR UNIONS BACK CSDR For the first time in Peru, the country's four national labour unions met to discuss child health in order to find ways organized labour could effectively contribute to improving the situation of children in the country. The meeting, which was held 4-6 August, gathered together 130 leaders representing the General Confederation of Peruvian workers (CGTP), the National Confederation of Workers (CNT), the Workers of the Peruvian Revolution (CTRP) and the Confederation of Peruvian Workers (CTP). To encourage child survival actions the four unions agreed to establish a joint commission called the "Inter-Union Commission for Child Survival and Defense of Female and Child Health."
