The Non-Aligned Movement, in a resolution adopted at their Ninth
Conference of Heads of State or Government, urged all States to
sustain, accelerate and extend collaborative efforts in Child
Survival and Development to ensure the maximum possible
reduction in the waste of child lives to readily preventable
diseases and malnutrition. The resolution, adopted at the 4-7
September Summit held in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, was co-sponsored
by Mali and Egypt with support from India, Bangladesh,
     Yugoslavia and Indonesia.

At the same time, the meeting of heads of state noted the
"impressive progress" achieved during the 1980's through the
concerted efforts of governments, NGOs, and other institutions,
in collaboration with UN organizations, especially UNICEF and
     WHO.

The resolution welcomed consideration by the U.N. General
Assembly of the proposed Convention on the Rights of the Child,
which is expected to be adopted at its 1989 session. It urged
all states to ratify the Convention and ensure its early
     implementation.

In addition, the resolution underscored the Non-Aligned
Movement's support for a World Summit for Children, welcoming
the proposal as "a constructive means for mobilizing national
and international efforts with a view to promoting a
collaborative global effort to address a common challenge."

In an appeal for massive support to the convening of the World
Summit for Children, President Moussa Traore of Mali, noted that
the deteriorating economic and social situation in most
developing countries had seriously aggravated the situation of
vulnerable groups such as children, women and the elderly.

"It is painful to note that some 40,000 children die each day
from hunger malnutrition and disease. Despite major efforts by
UNICEF and WHO together with other humanitarian organizations, a
mobilization of the international community is still needed in
order to deal with this situation," he said.
