[misc.headlines.unitex] Geothermal Plant in Hawaii

SEAC@unc.bitnet (Student Env Action Coalition) (10/12/89)

We have just started a letter writing campaign to try and stop the
building of a geothermal plant in Hawaii. The development of this plant
is the largest and most expensive development ever undertaken in that
region. One of the drilling sites is in the heart of the Qao Kele O Puna
Forest, THE LAST LOWLAND RAINFOREST IN THE UNITED STATES! Once this
project begins the forest will be seriously damaged.
A major argument in favor of this project is that it will lower Hawaii's
"dangerous overdependence" on oil. According to the State Department of
Business and Economic Development, only 30% of the oil used in Hawaii is
used for electrical energy, which this plant will provide. 70% of the
oil is used for transportation and machinery, both of which will
increase when the plant is being built and run.
The majority of the energy will not be used on the main island. It will
be exported to Oahu and Maui via a deep ocean cable which could be
broken in cases of high turbulence such as tropical storms. Because
this area is unstable, the existing oil-fired plants will have to be
kept on line as back-ups.
Because Wao Kele O Puna forest lies on the side of an active volcano,
it houses a unique ecosystem of plants and animal species found nowhere
else in the world, it also provides the essential function of watershed
protection.
Hawaii's true energy needs can be met through expanded use of wind,
biomass, solar energy, waste-heat recovery, more efficient architecture,
and above all conservation. These steps would not damage one of our
last rainforests.
