From: Christopher Ho <Chris%ECLD@ECLA> Since this has come out into the open... VMS Backup has a number of deficiencies, the greatest of which is probably its inability to dump to a tape drive on a remote DECnet system. Here at USC we've come up with a solution for our backups to make this work. It involves 2 DCL .COM files on each system to be backed up, a .COM file and DECnet object on the system with the tape drive, and use of BACKUP and CONVERT. It's not perfect, but it does work and is preferable to '2nd generation' (ie_ backup -> disk saveset -> tape saveset) backups (which we used to use). If individuals on INFO-VAX are interested, they can send me a message and I can forward our stuff to them. -------

From: Christopher Ho <Chris@USC-ECLC.ARPA> Some of you may recall a method of doing DECnet backups that I distributed a couple of months ago. I have now written a program which resides as a DECnet object on a VMS system with a tape drive, and acts as a one-way BACKUP server. This offers some improvements in that it is a little more robust, and allows larger block sizes on tape: up to 32Kb. The source is available via anonymous FTP from USC-ECLC in directory PS:<CHRIS.PUBLIC> as DCNBACKUP.B32 and DCNBACKUP.LIS (which can be assembled). If you do not have FTP access, send me a request and I can mail the files to you. -------
