Fixed. ran xh-make-links on Math. distributed to Daisy. something long forgotten but now remembered: set morethaneighteenchars = "hi" 'works' but then: echo $morethaneighteenchars complains about "Variable syntax." and echo $morethaneighteenchars complains that "morethaneighteench" is undefined.
