[news.announce.newgroups] CALL FOR VOTES: soc.culture.commonwealth

dave@cogsci.indiana.edu (David Chalmers) (08/26/89)

This is an official call for votes on the group soc.culture.commonwealth.

This group would be for the discussion of the cultures and countries of what
was once the "British Empire" and is now the "Commonwealth of Nations".

These countries include Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Jamaica,
Malaysia, and various other countries around the world. (Also included, and
welcome for discussion, are India and some African countries, but these are
more likely to be discussed in soc.culture.indian and soc.culture.african.)

The USA, while not explicitly a member of the Commonwealth, is implicitly
included in the group's charter (being an ex-member of the British Empire,
and English-speaking to boot), especially for the purposes of comparison.

Possible topics of discussion include, but are not limited to:

o Aspects of the cultures of the various countries.
  o Comparisons with the USA.
o Recent news from Commonwealth countries.
o The history of the British Empire, and then the Commonwealth.
o The role that the English language plays in the various cultures.
o Differences in language usage in the various cultures.
o Political systems of the various cultures.
o Arts and sports in Commonwealth countries.
o Problems faced by Commonwealth expatriates in the US.
o Information for those who wish to visit these countries.

The group has been discussed for more than the required 14 days in
news.groups. It will be unmoderated.

To vote, reply to this article, or send your vote to dave@cogsci.indiana.edu.
To make my job easier, please include "yes" or "no" in the subject line of
your response. Voting will end at midnight on Thursday 21st September.
