This is prompted by the earlier message from Mike O'Dell at LBL-Unix
regarding the IDM 500. Another very interesting back-end database
machine is the recently announced Data Base Processor from Intel
(iDBP). We have been serving as one of several beta test sites for
the iDBP. So far, the system looks very good! We will be connecting
it to a VAX (VMS) shortly. If anyone out there would like more details
on our experience with the iDBP, feel free to call:

Yes, the Intel machine is quite interesting. From what I have
seen of it, it is very much like the IDM. One thing
a little strange is the use of 8-bit integers in some odd places.
But at any rate, it looks like a good product. Nice to have a choice!

PS - we have our IDM dual-ported between a VMS machine and a Vax/Unix
machine.

A friend is interested in talking to users of database systems (that
run on VMS) in general, and in Oracle specifically. I think he would
prefer folks in the New England area (then there would be a good
chance of being able to see a demo), but responses from anywhere are
welcome.

Many thanks, and please respond by mail. If there is enough interest,
I will summarize and post a message

Touch Technologies, Inc. of Escondido, CA has a language which is
geared around trivial use of database systems on VMS. It isn't a
DBMS in and of itself; rather, it allows you to open a generic
thing called a "structure," and access fields of the current record
within the structure. A structure is simply a database of any
type. All type checking, data packing and unpacking, output formatting
(edit masking), etc. is done by the language, INTOUCH. The programmer
need not know anything about the underlying structure of the database
itself.

I'm not sure if this is what your friend is looking for, but he can

Our OSD (Office Systems Group) is using ORACLE on the VAx,, & making some
d/B changes with options of imporance to us... It waqs selected as one of
the better systems, available on common hardware...l; Oracle support to us
has been good,,, but so has the "ADDABSExxxx"ADDABASE" software use by or
Cusopmer Support Group.. It also is very flexible, written in natural
language, for an open-ended database system, currently ruiing running on
an IBM & Vax 725 system.
