[news.announce.newgroups] CALL FOR DISCUSSION : rec.sport.soccer

hans%lfcs.edinburgh.ac.uk@NSFNET-RELAY.AC.UK (Hans Huttel) (11/01/89)

I would like to propose a newsgroup rec.sport.soccer.

(Ideally, it would be called rec.sport.football, but this name is
already in use. Soccer is much more widespread than American football
and everywhere the preferred name is football. But anyway...)

MOTIVATION:

The majority of articles (about 10 a day) in rec.sport.misc are now on
topics related to the well-known sport officially called Association
Football, better known as soccer. Since most of the global rec.sport.*
newsgroups deal with sports primarily of interest to a United States
audience, since soccer is one of the most popular sports in Europe,
Africa, Asia, and Latin America, and since the U.S. will be hosting
the World Cup in the foreseeable future, the time seems ripe for
rec.sport.soccer.

PROPOSED CHARTER (with comments in brackets) :

The newsgroup will be a forum for :

- Postings of international & national soccer results
- Discussions of soccer teams & players
- Technical discussions of strategies, dubious referee decisions etc.

[- in short, about the same type of postings discussed in other
rec.sport.* newsgroups]

The newsgroup will be global and unmoderated

[It is of course impossible to foresee how heavy the traffic will be,
but it will probably be at about the same level as that of
rec.sport.misc. If moreover the S/N ratio is similar to that of
rec.sport.misc there should be no need for moderation]

FURTHER PROCEDURE :

I will issue a first call for votes two weeks from now (October 15),
provided that there is no disagreement on the name & charter.

Regards

Hans
