Subject:CALL FOR DISCUSSION ON CREATION OF A NEW NEWSGROUP ON ASSOCIATIVE/CONTENT-ADDRESSABLE MEMORIES/PROCESSORS This call is the first step in the creation of a new newsgroup on associative/content-addressable memories/processors, according to the guidelines generally agreed upon across USENET. It starts a discussion period of between two to four weeks to determine the name and charter of the proposed group and whether it will be moderated or unmoderated. After the discussion period a call for vote will be posted. Please respond to news.announce.newgroups ASAP. This group is moderated, and the "Followup-to:" header will be set so that the actual discussion takes place only in news.groups. Users on sites which have difficulty posting to moderated groups may mail submissions intended for news.announce.newgroups to "announce-newgroups@ncar.ucar.edu". The following is our proposal: Name of the newsgroup: comp.assoc_proc (or comp.cam ?) Purpose:Provide a forum for the discussion of issues and events related to associative memories/processors in general, and content addressable memories/processors in particular. Moderated/unmoderated: Unmoderated Rationale: Associative memories/processors have been a topic of particular interest for more than 30 years now, mostly perhaps because they are thought to resemble the intelligent processes that take place in the human brain. Until recently, however, the technology has not been available to make any significant commercial impact. Lately, a trickle of new products suggests that the long incubation period may be ending, boosting the interest level of researches and product innovators in this exciting technology. The following is a partial list of topics which can be discussed in the proposed newsgroup: -Definition of terms and concepts -Hardware/software implementations of associative memories/processors; content addressable memories/processors -Implementation of basic cells and building blocks -Practical applications (i.e. datacomm, neural nets, pattern recognition, databases etc.) -Research topics -New product suggestions/announcements The process of group creation: This call for discussion on creation of the new newsgroup, issued on Sept. 28, 1989, is the first step in the creation of the new newsgroup, as generally agreed upon across Usenet. The discussion period should last at least 14 days and no more than 30 days. After the discussion period, if it has been determined that a new group is really desired, and there is general agreement to its name, charter and if it should be moderated or unmoderated, a call for vote will be posted to news.announce.newsgroups and possibly to other related groups or mailing lists. The voting period should last for at least 30 days. If 100 more YES/create votes are received than NO/don't create, the group is created.
