There is one week left in the discussion period for the group comp.sys.sun.386i, a moderated news group. A Sun386i mailing list has existed for over a year and will be distributed via usenet in an undigested format. The discussion I've seen so far has mainly centered around its name. Three different names have been proposed 386i, i386 and intel. Sun will at some time in the future sell a Sun486i and provide upgrades for existing 386i systems. Therefore the proposal of the intel name to cover both the 386i and 486i models. Personally I'd pick 386i to match the mailing list address which is: sun-386i@rice.edu. What do you think? Thanks to those who informed me that moderated mailing lists don't need to go through the usenet voting process to become news groups. [Moderator note: This is not quite true. Moderated mailing lists which are limited to Internet addresses can become "inet" groups, but "inet" groups are supposedly limited only to Internet sites which is far short of all of "usenet". If you want a fully netwide group you still have to go through the usual vote, although it is permissible to use the mailing list to solicit votes. --Greg ] However I have not received any response from my messages to fair@apple.com. So I will continue with the last week of the discussion period and then call for a vote next week. J.
