the echo command on UIMPS 4.0 seems to return an exit status of 255 if it echoes more than 256 characters (which it does so successfully). i thought we fixed this sort of thing in V7.

You probably did. In the BSD/SysV merge, we accidentally omitted an "exit(0)". It's fixed in 5.0.
